Our Q&A With Hayley
Q: What inspired you when designing the Hayley Paige x BHLDN collection?
A: This collection is charming, approachable, and celebratory. There’s always a sprinkle of indulgence when it comes to wedding-related design, but these styles offer interchangeability and fabulous-on-a-whim style (with permission to frolic, of course!). I wanted to design pieces that felt like a familiar fantasy, with subtle hints of nostalgia and newness.
Q: How did you get started as a designer?
A: In my fantasy, I clicked my heels together…in reality, becoming a designer is forever a work in progress. So many early experiences initiated an emotional and visceral attachment to pursuing a creative profession: my grandmother teaching me to sew; my parents introducing me to the imaginative and soulful music of the 50s, 60s, and 70s; and my fascination with Disney animation and illustration.
Q: Tell us about the first gown you ever designed.
A: It was a short, hot pink wedding dress made from my mom’s old prom dress! I was about 6 years old and I hand-sewed parts of it together. My cousin and I played dress-up nonstop, which had a huge effect on me wanting to celebrate and create through dress design. I go to Burning Man with that cousin every year—we love to ‘get extra’ and dress up thematically.
Q: What are three phrases that describe the Hayley Paige x BHLDN bride?
A: Full of zest, wit-full-of-whimsy, casual princess
Q: What are three phrases that describe YOU?
A: Playful, attitude of gratitude, easily distracted by sparkle
Q: Can you walk us through your design process for this collection?
A: While it’s true that there is a beginning spark and an end product, the development of each design is as unique as a love story. This collection is also my first foray into cocktail and supplemental wardrobe pieces. I wanted to make a splash, while allowing a playful approach to creating a wedding wardrobe.
Q: What songs are on repeat in your studio?
A: I keep it eclectic, but some of my go-to’s include Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks is a national treasure and I’ll shout it from the rooftops) and Al Green or Crosby Stills Nash & Young (if I’m feeling soulful). For this collection, I dabbled freely in 90’s nostalgia with No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls, and heaps of soul hip-hop groups. (Click here to listen to the Hayley Paige x BHLDN playlist!)
Q: Which 2020 bridal trend are you most excited about?
A: I love “side hustle” lewks—the idea of complementing your ceremony gown with a romper or cocktail dress in a similar fabric. We’re living in a world of bridal unbridled, so there are no rules in playing up your wardrobe, mixing-and-matching, having something detachable…we’re here for it!
Q: Veil, tiara, or flower crown?
A: Don’t make me choose! How about a floral cathedral veil with a light dusting of rhinestones?
Q: Which piece from the new collection would you most want to wear?
Q: If you could raid one person’s closet, who would it be?
A: Elton John or Gwen Stefani.
Q: Tell us about your favorite details in the collection.
A: Honestly, the cocktail pieces! This is an entirely new category for me, so I’m grateful to bring a new ‘date’ to the party. A lot of these pieces are meant to pair with existing bride styles, so they’re a spirited way to expand our offerings without ruffling too many feathers.
Q: Is there a famous or historic bride whose style you admire?
A: I’m not sure if you’d consider this historic, but I’ve got to go with Ariel from The Little Mermaid. The puff sleeve and basque waist look is begging for a comeback!
