Our Q&A With Jenny Yoo
Q: How did Jenny Yoo get started?
A: When launching my first bridesmaid collection in November 2002, I was inspired to design a line of polished dresses for the stylish, modern woman. I believe that while weddings are a tradition, rules can and need to be modified. My designs emphasize the philosophy that one must evolve with today’s changing times. In 2006, I launched my namesake bridal collection, filled with exquisitely crafted styles for the contemporary woman. The Jenny by Jenny Yoo collection followed in 2016, designed for the youthful and spirited bride.
Q: What inspires your designs?
A: I find inspiration everywhere, from the architectural lines of a structure to desert landscapes that stir ideas for a color story to a fashion era that energizes me to reimagine fresh and modern designs. I look to the rich textures and patterns of fabrics or laces to guide the tone of each collection. Ultimately, these moments allow me to envision gowns that capture the spirit of the bride I’m designing for.
Q: What are some hallmarks of Jenny Yoo designs?
A: Jenny Yoo features a signature union of clean, architectural lines, contemporary romanticism, and elevated fabrics including signature stretch velvet, luxe chiffon, sculpted crepe, and soft tulle. Hand-placed embellishments and one-of-a-kind prints offer unique feminine textures. All our styles are crafted to be runway-ready and illuminate an unparalleled array of exclusive hues.
Q: How would you describe the Jenny Yoo bride?
A: The Jenny Yoo bride is modern and effortless with a sultry sophistication. She’s fashion-forward, feminine, and seeks unexpected details.
Q: You’re well-known for both gowns and bridesmaid dresses. How can a bride make her gown and wedding party style feel cohesive?
A: With luxe fabrics and vibrant colors, brides can lean towards dresses that complement their aesthetic, gown, and venue. Velvet adds depth and warmth with rich hues, satin elevates a guest or wedding party look, and chiffon is versatile enough to be worn for any setting.
Q: What is your favorite decade of fashion?
A: The 1930s. The era exudes timeless glamour and sultry sophistication, embracing curves with bias cut gowns in fluid, feminine silhouettes. One of my all-time favorite designers, Madeleine Vionnet, revolutionized bias cut gowns that skimmed over a woman’s contours for a slinky, feminine shape. 1930s gowns epitomized allure in draping silks and luxurious laces, paired with dynamic details like open backs, soft ruffles, blouson sleeves, and dramatic capes.
Q: What is your favorite famous wedding gown?
A: I love Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s wedding gown. It was inherently simple yet created an understated elegance that felt incredibly chic and modern.
Q: Do you have any advice for brides who are in the process of defining their wedding style?
A: Brides should celebrate their personal style on their wedding day. Choose a gown that’s comfortable, figure flattering, and feels great in the atmosphere and setting you’ve dreamed of.
