Behind the Scenes at The Greenbrier

Behind the Scenes:
Spring 2020 at The Greenbrier

Curious about the colorful backdrop for our Spring 2020 gowns photoshoot? Allow us to introduce The Greenbrier! Since 1778, this historic resort in the Allegheny Mountains has welcomed guests who want to ‘take the waters’ in its natural sulphur springs. Today, it’s also famous for top-notch golf and, of course, jaw-dropping interior design. The hotel contains over 700 vibrantly-decorated rooms—and no two are the same! For a closer look at this iconic destination, we’re going behind the scenes on location with three members of the BHLDN team.

How was The Greenbrier chosen for our Spring 2020 gowns shoot?

Julia W., Producer: “We loved the eclectic vibe and vibrant color stories. With 700 different rooms, it was a pattern playground for us to explore!”

Kirby C., Stylist: “We felt like it would be a great setting for our gowns. The contrast of patterned wallpaper and bright colors against bridal looks felt very different and new.”

Kelly R., Social Manager: “It’s truly a fascinating place, and photographs beautifully!”

The most interesting space at The Greenbrier was...

Julia: “I loved the indoor swimming pool! We didn’t have a chance to dive in ourselves, but it reminded me of an exclusive 1950s swim club with the fabric-draped ceiling and AstroTurf.”

Kirby: “The Greenbrier is such a whimsical place. At times, I felt like I was in The Nutcracker or Alice in Wonderland. Everything is on such a grand scale—you feel so tiny. My favorite location was the ballroom! It’s all pink and red; you truly feel transported to another world.”

Kelly: “Definitely the casino—there was a huge seashell fountain in the middle of the room! I also loved the vintage-style ice cream parlor and the Presidential Suite; it was amazing to learn about all the U.S. presidents who have stayed there.”

My favorite gown was...

Julia: “The Frederique Gown. We shot it on the staircase of the Presidential Suite, and it looked stunning against the pattern of the wallpaper.”

Kirby: “I loved the Avie Gown—showcasing something so modern in a place filled with so much history was really interesting. The Pina Gown also looked incredible in the pink and red ballroom.”

Kelly: “How could I choose just one?! They all had amazing moments.”

My favorite moment from the shoot was...

Julia: “Exploring the resort on our first day. It’s like an adult amusement park! They have an indoor pool, a bowling alley, a casino, a theater, an ice rink…the entertainment options are never-ending.”

Kirby: “I love the chaos and hustle of shoot days. It’s such a whirlwind and seeing everything come together is amazing. It was also so special to tour the hotel in fancy dresses on our first night. We felt like little kids, running around and finding something new in room after room. The moments just before a shoot starts are really unique.”

Kelly: “I was so intrigued by the history of the hotel! Did you know that it was a hospital during the Civil War? To me, that meant it had to be haunted. I asked multiple employees if they’d heard any spooky stories, but none of them had…I just think they didn’t want to scare any guests away!”
